- On January 1, 2001 the municipalities of
Nepean, Gloucester, Kanata, Vanier, Rockcliffe Park, Cumberland, West
Carleton, Goulbourn, Osgoode, and Rideau joined together to form the new
city of Ottawa. Ottawa is the fourth-largest urban area in Canada with a population
of 1,170,000.
The new banner brings together the spirit and partnership of each of
these communities where you will discover the blend of future and past. An
influential national capital city where technology, entrepreneurship and
innovation compliment it’s treasured roots, cultures, and traditions.
Within the region residents and visitors enjoy the many multi-cultural and
annual festivals, family events, parklands, area ski resorts, 150 km of
recreational pathways, and the many cross-country trails and golf courses.
The National Capital Commission maintains and protects 48,200 hectares of
federal land within the region that includes the prestigious Greenbelt,
historical sites, Gatineau Park and the scenic Rideau Canal.
The region boasts an National Hockey League and a Triple A baseball team.
The Corel Centre in Kanata is a state-or-the-art sports and entertainment
facility and home to the Ottawa
Senators. Experience the excitement
offered in the sumptuous $720 million Casino in Hull. Ottawa also has 30
museums, 50 galleries and nine theatres for stage plays, musicals, operas
and classical concerts. As well, you will find a generous selection of
nightclubs, pubs and bars, catering to every taste in music, dance and
live comedy. The Byward Market and Elgin Street are just a few of the most
popular areas for evening entertainment.
The new Ottawa is a city rich in history and offers one of the most highly
educated, highly skilled work forces in the country. Ottawa has over 400
elementary and secondary schools in the region and 8 colleges and
universities, plus numerous technology institutes and professional
